Unfolding – Mahindra presents The Kabir Festival Mumbai

2 Jan

The Kabir Festival Mumbai, has been inspired by the Kabir Project headed by Shabnam Virmani – a Documentary film maker who after the Godhra Riots traveled with folk singers who have sung the music of Kabir for generations. Six years of these travels resulted in four documentary films as well as several recordings of folk as well as classical musicians who have expressed the words of Kabir through their music.

Kabir Festivals have been held in several cities of India and abroad. While the Festivals have a common thread in terms of screening of the musical documentary films made by Shabnam Virmani, talks & discussions by prominent speakers and live music concerts by folk and classical singers from different parts of India, each festival also weaves in threads of local colour in terms of inclusion of local artistes, fresh ideas, collaborations with diverse organizations, outreach programmes etc.

The main focus of The Kabir Festival Mumbai, is to introduce the youth to the message of Kabir which is perhaps even more relevant today than it was in his time . To this end the first seven days of the festival are given over to run up events with individual schools, colleges and communities. Screening of Documentary films followed by a facilitated discussion on music and dance workshops as well as story telling sessions for the younger children all seek to foster in the youth awareness and understanding of the message of Kabir.

The last three days of the festival will have multiple events at different locations, all open to the public on first-come-first-served basis. Films which inspire thought, Music from different parts of India – some soul-touching and some foot-tapping, Dancers who seek to express the words of Kabir through their, wall of expression, Art displays form the Kabir festival Mumbai.
